Lobo: Creativity, Communication and Success

Posted by & filed under NEWS.

Wolves are animals that live alone or in packs. These mammals are able to communicate visually with an impressive array of expressions. They have an extraordinary ability to adapt. They feel the need to scent-mark their territory and they have a greater cranial capacity than any other of their species. We really do not know if the choice of the name ‘Lobo’ (Spanish word for ‘wolf’) is due to the previous wolf features, or if it has another logical explanation, but it seemed appropriate to highlight what features this agency shares with this fascinating animal.

Lobo has been an exceptional Brandpartner for several reasons: for their understanding of the concept we were searching, their true commitment to being part of this team, the quality and workmanship of their pieces, for being in tune with the BassAwards, for including their own special touch to our idea outline, for their impeccable creative work, for their differentiation, their value, their own personal identity in this project… But we trully believe that they made no effort doing so, because Lobo is an agency that outstands for its know-how and they know that these Awards’ mission is to acknowledge.

As they say Lobo has always defined itself as not being easily definable. That is, we have always tried not to settle on a particular style or technique, not to let ourselves be pigeonholed into a certain type of expression. That’s why along the years we sought to explore different techniques, incorporating various talents from the most diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. We believe that helps us keep a fresh approach to every new assignment, focusing on the client’s needs rather than trying to impose our own style to him”.

Their differentiation is clear: they always add value to their proposals in a unique way: “what most clients seek is respect for their brand, and our help in reinforcing it. Also, production value, naturally. But besides that, when people come to Lobo is because they’re also looking for something extra, a fresh approach on their communication. That’s why many times a client comes to us with a very open brief, willing to make us part of the creation process – they don’t view us simply as service providers”.

For Loic Francois Maire Dubois- Creative Executive Producer- on the experience of having Lobo as a MediaPartner, besides having a lot of fun creating the teaser and promo pieces”, it has been an successful experience because they “always love to be involved with initiatives that draw people’s attention to great design, and to our field of work in general”.

“It all began in 1994. Mateus de Paula Santos was still halfway through Graphic Design college, having just interned at MTV Brazil’s motion graphics department; Nando Cohen was an Architecture graduate from the prestigious University of São Paulo (USP) and had a deep interest in storytelling and character design. They got together with a couple of other colleagues and started out very humbly, with a simple home studio.

At the time, MTV Brazil was the local reference for cutting-edge motion design, and a hotbed for new talent. Lobo was one of the first companies that started bringing that fresh language into advertising and mainstream media, and soon began to attract a buzz in the industry”.

It is obvious that the market has changed since then and that technologies have facilitated professional work even further. Technology has made working from a distance easy and it allows us to establish networks and partnerships with professionals from around the globe.

We asked Lobo about new trends in Broadcast Design and their response is strongly related to these changes.

“The technological revolution has come and become the new mainstream, so people nowadays are no longer happy with just the most awesomely realistic 3D, or the most jaw-droppingly physics simulation. There’s a newfound interest in storytelling, in graphic style, even in handicraft – that’s why there’s been a resurgence in handmade techniques like stop motion, paper sculpting etc.”

On the other hand, Lobo is not only our Brand Partner, but they also reflect the BassAwards spirit in the quality of their work, not to mention their commitment to social and environmental changes. They carry out jobs that help bring about supportive minds for a better world.

As an example of the latter, we considered highlighting their work for Amnesty International “Everybody against Everybody”. Lobo tells us all about the experience: “It was a very intense experience indeed, since we were dealing with a heavy subject and had to touch upon the darkest moments of human history. We tried to channel that unease into the animation itself, turning the violence represented by the torn and ripped paper the very engine that propels the animation forward.

The response to that spot was very positive, and still is in fact, even more than three years after its release, which can be considered a huge shelf life in our fast turnover business.

As for our role in the campaign, Leo Burnett Lisbon gave us plenty of freedom while creating the spot: they had a poster ad, featuring a world map in which the shape of all continents were composed of old illustrations, engravings and b&w photos of all sorts of soldiers, weapons and warfare, and commissioned us to turn it into an animated spot the best way we saw fit”.

We hope that more and more agencies and studios develop the true spirit of solidarity and commitment.

Lobo, our partners in the agency – Mateus-Loic and his team have been the first to enter the BassAwards contest with a great promotional piece that expresses the sense of everything surrounding current motion graphics, the origin of the unique history of audiovisual design.

We  really couldn’t have chosen a better Brand Partner than them. Thanks Lobo.
