A big thank you goes to all members of the jury and our media partners (Stash, Dotmogo, CanalPlus and CGSociety), because each of them has contributed greatly to the development of the prizes.

Don’t lose sight of us on twitter, vimeo, facebook, linkedin, and keep updated (Newsletter), our second edition, BassAwards 2013, is on its way!

Interview with Bobby Voeten and Bernat Casanovas, BassAwards first winners

Posted by & filed under NEWS.

The winners of Best Social and Best Young Talent Categories reveal the way they work. We wanted to dedicate this post to our first Gold in the Best Social and Best Young Talent categories.

We wanted them to count as the idea of the award-winning videos, what inspires them and how they developed it. Our winners are examples of hard work and good designfocused on obtaining the best results.

First, we are going to introduce  Bobby Voeten (Australia), Designer and Motion Grapher in CROP, winning gold with his piece Australia Marriage Equality:

Why is this campaign so important? Did it had some significant influence in the Australian society?

The Australian Marriage Equality (AME) campaign is basically fighting for the rights of gay couples who want to get married. Homosexuals are still not allowed to marry in Australia although they have civil union schemes in some states.  This campaign shows people that the rejections against same-sex marriage are pointless and based on nothing but false assumptions.  The purpose of the campaign and the animated viral is to create awareness in the Australian society and get political support to change the law.

What are the influences that have shaped your work?

My influence was mainly drawn from my background and what inspires me from a design aesthetic.  I’m from Holland and I started working on this project a few months after I moved to Australia. I wasn’t aware of the fact that gay marriage wasn’t legalised. Holland is more openminded and gay-marriage has been legalised for years, I hope the Australian people and its Government will get on the right side of history.   I might be straight myself but where I’m from most people don’t tolerate discrimination in general.

Thinking about the project, what can you tell us about it? (idea, steps followed…)

So a Melbourne based production company found out about me because someone dropped my name. They thought I was the right man for the job.  The guy working there told me all about the campaign and Australian politics when it comes to marriage equality. He already had written a script. Together we tweaked it to perfection and I started working on the storyboard and the visuals. After he sent me the voice-over I started working on the animation.

What was your motivation to compete in the BassAwards? What do you except with this recognition?

A Spanish Animation studio picked up my work on Vimeo and was so enthusiastic about my work that it sent me a message to tell me that I should join the Bassawards. So I checked out the website. When I read about the Best Social Category I thought about the AME campaign instantly. The rest is history.   I certainly hope to get more publicity for my one-man-company CROP. More publicity probably leads to a bigger network.

Which models do you follow? Do you have a look at someone in special?

As an animator I’m addicted to animation in general. Vimeo is my Facebook. Of course I love the work produced out of Pixar and Dreamworks,  but I rather focus on animators who have a similar style and make similar products like Sebas and Clim, Tony Zagoraios, Fraser Davidson and Jr.canest.

What are your points of reference (blogs, magazines…)?

I use blogs like Motionographer and Design You Trust to get inspired as well.

Will you come back to participate next year?

Maybe I’ll come back next year. Depends if I feel I have a product that suits a category.

 What are your future expectations?

My future expectations? I just started running this one-man-business not even two years ago so there’s still a long road. I continue to work hard and I hope CROP lasts forever. Some day I want to be one of those guys that created an animation that will get thousands of likes on Vimeo. For me it’s more about respect from other artists than big clients with a pile of money.

Bernat Casanovas (Spain) (Bernat in Motion), having completed his studies at the Escola Superior d’Imatge iu Disseny IDEP, is our Gold in the Best Young Talent category with the piece Crazy World:

Thinking about the project, what can you tell usaboutit? (idea, stepsfollowed…)

During the IDEP’s Cinema 4D course, I decided to create an animated video to promote my web. There’s where became the first idea. Meanwhile I heard about your competition and I thought it could be interesting. Thats  the reason why I dedicated hardly to do my best.

What was your motivation to compete in theBassAwards? What do you expect witht his recognisition?

I met your contest through an ex-professor. I saw it was global and I became interested about it. I always hoped compete internationally and Bassawards made this easy todo.

With your award I expect a certain recognition in the sector. And, of course, I hope
to find a job in some studio or production company and start new proyects and challenges in Motions Graphics environment.

Which models do youfollow? Do you have a look at someonespecial ? What are your points of reference (blogs, magazines…)?

I’m an enthusiast of web navigation, observation and tracking chanels and users on VIMEO and Motionographers. I like a lot how Blink my brain (from Brasil, Sao Paulo),  Diestro (Spain, Barcelona) ,  Toch Studio (Spain, Madrid), Julien Vallée (Canada, Montreal), Mike Winckelmann (USA, Wisconsin), Lumbre (Spain, Barcelona), and Agència Joe (Spain, Mallorca) works.

Will you come back to participate next year?

I expect to find an interesting and challenging proyect with enough quality to participate in next year’s Bassawards professional sector.

Where do you see your future?  In your country or abroad?

I see my near future out of my country because the crisis is hitting it hard. I’m willing to travel to progress and success as a professional Motion Graphics designer.

Our first winners in the-Best Young Talent and Best Social categories

Posted by & filed under NEWS.

After weeks getting works handed in from all over the world we are proud to announce that we have winners in the Best Social and Best Young Talent categories.

Videos that work towards a better world, bringing consciousness; pieces that stand out because young talents are better than ever, because they expose their transgressive ideas and their ‘savoir-faire’. Each and every one of the participants in these two categories of the BassAwards have highlighted the potential of audiovisual features as overwhelming and transgressive.

In this first edition, the BassAwards are delighted to give the Gold to Crazy World in the Best Young Talent category and Australia Marriage Equality  in the Best Social category.

Australia Marriage Equality by Booby Voeten, gold in the Best Social category,  ”is campaigning to change the law so that same-sex couples are allowed to marry in Australia. The objective of the ad is to dismiss the case that marriage equality will have a negative impact and show the positive pro-marriage impacts it will have”.

In the Best Young Talent category, Crazy World, Bernat Casanovas of  IDEP school, presents his work in which it is clear that it will be one of the standards of this generation of audiovisual design. He states that “After finishing my studies in IDEP, I produced this 3D animation to advertise my website and promote myself in the world of motion graphics. Created with Cinema 4D and After Effects.”

To check out our Bronze and Silvers, please visit Winners section of our website.

The result of this vote is from the conscientious work of our judges by 60%, with the remaining 40% of  popular vote.

At the BassAwards organization we are honoured to have had this cast of designers in our very first edition. We would like to thank everyone who participated in this process and emphasize on the quality of all the submitted work.

Remember that the deadline for entries in the Professional Categories ends December 31, 2012.

Best Social and Best Young Talent categories, see you in 2013! Stay tuned and check out www.bassawards.org for our regular newsletter.

Grey and Gold. Static but Moving. This is the Badge for the Best in the World.

Posted by & filed under NEWS.

Coming up with an image, generating movement in it, aligning it with sounds, conveying your ideas … are arguably some of the premises of motion graphics.

BassAwards wanted the image of the trophy, which will only be awarded to golds in each category, to be directly related to our profession, primarily representing the idea of moving images. The perfect people to do this were Ochoa and DíazLlanos  leaders in quality industrial design, who are a multi-awarded company worldwide.

The core of this desire is this fantastic award that came from thinking in the traditional animation of a three-dimensional object, using the origins of animation as the basis of new digital tools, the idea of a drawing on transparent acetates that were assembled in layers, which are in fact the birth of current digital layers.

The awards logo, separated in two layers, includes a circle in one of them, and a letter in the other. This leads to the perception that they are a two-in-one icon. One that is complete, just like us.

It is from here, in order not to stand too far from the traditional core of animation where you would quickly flick through notebook pages creating the illusion of movement, that these folds arise. Looking down at the trophy, it emulates this movement of flicking through pages.

A trophy designed specifically for those who understand motion graphics, its origins and development, who know  about quality design show casing. A trophy that is a hallmark for the best designers in the world.

You can still get the gold. Submit your pieces before 31 December.

Clients and studies: The opinion of two professionals

Posted by & filed under NEWS.

We like well-done works, quality works done by professionals around the world.  Moreover, we want to know and convey the views of the best audiovisual professionals in the world.

The relationship between clients and studies is very important, and the proper functioning of the work will depend on whether it is brilliant or not. Due to convey this concept, we have the pleasure to collect the vision of Lilian Darmono Art Director and Designer  and Ricardo Fernandez, Creative Director at Canal Plus. By this way, we relevant actors in the world of audiovisual.

want to show the points of view of a study/designer and a TV channel that are

Asking them what encouraged them to work within this sector, Ricardo tells us that he “started working as a motion graphic designer at the end of my studies as an intern in CANAL +”. He says it clear: “I loved the experience and here I am. But I like other graphic design fields and branding too. Luckily we make prints, interactive, etc. These times are clearly blurring the lines between sectors.” Lilian likes “the combination of design/illustration and moving image”.

When we talk about their specific professional field and what do customers value the most, both mark the clients’ point of view and the importance of their satisfaction. Lilian remarks the importance of “honestly and clarity of communication”.  In the case of Ricardo, customers are not his clients, but the ones of Canal + Spain. “Basically they want that we treat them with respect, and be informed about our products in a different and surprisingly way”.

When asked about what is setting trends actually Ricardo says that “Futura Type is very trendy right now”, so he “supposes that Paul Renner is doing it almost a century later.  Seriously, Universal Everything probably already made it a few years ago. But now I can’t find anybody is clear setting a trend.” Lilian responds that she “honestly have no idea”. She thinks she “has reached a point in my life to just concentrate on craft, and hard work, and less on trends.”

In a creative and professional work it is of vital importance to have a clear set of references when working. Ricardo tells us that he obtains his references of “Art, life, street, people… that the important thing is knowing look. In his case currently music, urban art, take a walk with my dog and Facebook.” Lilian, meanwhile said that its references are in “My ‘workplace’ – Motionographer. Also on Vimeo. “

Customers, their tastes and aspirations often mark the pattern of design work. ¿There are trends amongst customers? In which point are we now? Where are we going?

Ricardo has a clear answer: “Yes, of course. Today it’s very easy to find “inspiration” on Youtube and imitate this make that the creative must be better and find more different good solutions.” Lilian completes this point adding that “yes, there is definitely a trend. We’re going more and more into the multi-screen multi-device World. . This means whatever moving product you’re delivering, it has to be well thought out to be adaptable enough for consumption across different gadgets–tablets, smartphones, as well as TV and web.”

And talking about formal training or self-taught collaborators, Ricardo tells us that “there are always exceptions but having a good education is basic, I’m sick of seeing “motionographers” who don’t know nothing about typography.” Lilian has “no preference. The proof is in the real thing. Once production starts, it usually becomes evident pretty quickly who you’d love to work with again and who you’d kick to the kerb”.

The continuous regeneration of the sector, with new professionals who bring new ideas is vital to its development. We told Lilian and Ricardo to give an advice to new professionals.

“Follow your heart, do what you love and work hard at it”, Lilian says. Moreover Ricardo says jokingly, but lack of reason “Ja, ja, they must study typography hard. It’s very important to have a good base and from there never losing the curiosity, in this professional field you must be continous learning and I don’t speak about software.”

In the creative process, the different departments of a company can be essential for a work to be in one way or another.  We asked if “there are differences between parts of a creative department outputs and the outputs of a marketing department?”.  “The marketing department must create the strategy and the brief and the creative department should work with it. The problem is when the marketing department tries to be as the creative department, they don’t perform the brief good and they don’t let the creative department work well”, declares Ricardo.

Lilian, on the other hand, “Hm, not sure what this question really means. But the best output will always come out when both departments have learned to listen to each other, not one looking down on the other, as is often the case out there, it seems.”

Ricardo Fernandez and Lilian Darmono are special persons and work in singular companys. We love people that are different and more over, people that love their work and do it with professionalism, quality and mark the public.

Thinking about Canal + Spain and its work, we have to highlight that it is a fantastic media partner and that the channel has conducted and contributed to different special programs and campaigns with a social message or with a goal related with sustainable development.   For example Nadie.es Where CanalPlus acts as communicator against climate change.

And Lilian develops different aspects of design. She and her husband have just launched their first kids’ iBook (for the iPad).

Lilian, Ricardo, thank you both for showing us in more details your vision of audiovisual design and its future perspective.

If you want to know more about them, have a look at our juror’s section.

Remember that you can submit your professional pieces until 31st December.
